The Endocrine System:
The endocrine system is composed of endocrine glands which secrete hormones. These hormones are analogous to keys. They travel by the blood stream and bind to cell receptors which are analogous to locks. One the key (hormone) binds to the lock (receptor) a cascade of chemical reactions occur which instruct the cell to respond in a particular manner.
Diabetes:
Diabetes is a condition characterized by a high glucose (sugar) level in the blood. The symptoms include but a not limited to blurry vision, excessive thirst, increased urination, weight loss, nausea and vomiting. There are two types of diabetes: Type I and Type II. Click here to learn more about Type I and Type II Diabetes
Hypothyroidism:
Hypothyroidism is due to a deficiency of thyroid hormone. The symptoms can include fatigue, intolerance to cold, dry skin, hair loss, irregular menstrual periods , constipation and weight gain. Most often this results from the body's immune system attacking and damaging the thyroid gland. It is treated by prescribing a thyroid hormone supplement. Hyperthyroidism:
Hyperthyroidism is a condition where thyroid hormone levels are too high. The symptoms can include a rapid heart rate, palpitations, shakiness, sweats, anxiety, weight loss, frequent bowel movements, and irregular menstrual periods. Click here to learn more about hyperthyroidism.
Thyroid Nodules. Thyroid nodules refer to growths on the thyroid gland. The great majority of thyroid nodules are benign. However about 5% of nodules could be due to thyroid cancer. The way to distinguish a benign nodule from a cancerous one is by performing a fine needle aspiration biopsy of the nodule. Click here to learn more about thyroid nodules.
Thyroid Cancer: Thyroid cancer is a solid tumor that is felt as a nodule or mass in the thyroid gland. About 80% of thyroid cancer is due to papillary thyroid cancer. Follicular thyroid cancer occurs in 10-15% of cases. Medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancer are much less common. About 3 x as many women as men develop thyroid cancer. It is most common after the age of 30 and is more likely to be aggressive in older adults. Click her to learn more about thyroid cancer.
Metabolism and Endocrinology: Abnormal hormone secretion from the thyroid gland, adrenal gland, ovaries or the pituitary gland can lead to weight problems and obesity. Click here to learn more about treating obesity
Metabolic Bone Disease: Endocrinologists treat osteoporosis and disorders of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D metabolism that can lead to bone loss. Click here to learn more about osteoporosis
